Detroit Micro-Enterprise Fund is Hiring

The Detroit Micro-enterprise Fund is seeking a Business Development Specialist.  This position is responsible for generating new loan volume, servicing a loan portfolio, training and technical assistance that meets the Detroit Micro-enterprise Fund’s mission, financial and risk goals.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.  An employee's specific job duties, priorities and performance expectations are detailed in his/her individual performance plan.

Actively prospect for loan opportunities from multiple sources, solicit loan customers, meet prospective borrowers, collect information, evaluate loan requests, negotiate loan terms and conditions.  Apply appropriate measures of development or ecological impact.


Underwrite loans in accordance with policy.  Prepare detailed risk analysis of borrowers' repayment ability including financial and industry analysis of the borrowers' businesses, present and defend loan proposals to loan committee and board of directors.  Administer and service Wayne County Urban Loan Fund.
Provide some workshop business training that covers business financials, management, industry trends and inventory.


Provide informal technical assistance services to community members, prospective clients and borrowers regarding plans, projections and business practices. 


Monitor outstanding borrowers for conformance with loan conditions, progress in meeting business goals, and overall business performance.  Reports all emerging problem loans to management as soon as weaknesses are detected.


Manage portfolio risk in accordance with industry and organization standards and directives of risk management.  Participate in collections and financial management of the portfolio as directed
May specialize through developing mission niches or through implementing particular strategies.
Participate fully with other members of the lending team on strategy, tactics and mission priorities.

Typical Problem Solving:  Defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts, and drawing valid conclusions.  Interpreting a variety of technical information and dealing with abstract and concrete variables.  Examples include: developing outreach strategies, evaluating credit worthiness, resolving customer concerns, negotiating financial terms, collecting problem loans.

Minimum Education Requirements:  Bachelor's degree, four years of college or equivalent experience required. 

Minimum Work Experience:  Three years relevant work experience.

Other Skills & Abilities:  
Specific experience lending to small businesses or to real estate construction
Working knowledge of computer business applications (word processing and spreadsheet)
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Proficiency with numbers and attention to detail
Finance and or bookkeeping
Business training experience
Ability to work independently and to balance multiple work assignments
Economic development experience working with low-to-moderate income persons and non-bankable businesses.

The employee is regularly required to travel in the metropolitan area to find prospects, visit customers, attend workshops, trainings and outreach events.

Salary:  $50,000-$55,000.
