Bank of America is looking for TOMORROW’s community leaders TODAY. We need your help to identify outstanding young people who are passionate about making a difference in our community while receiving a one-of-a-kind and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Applications are now open for students in Oakland, Wayne and Macomb Counties. There is no GPA minimum requirement and the application is a simple 8 question short essay type format. Although it is a fairly simple application, and because it is a competitive process, best applicants benefit from thoughtful and personal responses.

Community Group seeks part-time Administrative Assistant

General Population is the union of artists coming together to create ideas with a purpose. General Population focuses on working with community groups and artists. Cultural events, music, workshops, discussion groups, and information guides make up the work of General Population. As an administrative assistant it will be necessary to contribute toward meeting the needs of the Organization. Michigan's Education Reform


Race To The Top Legislation Opens Door To Federal Funds

This week, Governor Granholm signed a five-bill legislative package that reforms Michigan’s education system and allows the state to compete for up to $400 million in federal Recovery Act funds through President Obama’s Race to the Top initiative.  The state is finalizing its Race to the Top application which is due to the U.S. Department of Education by January 19.

The education reforms:

  • Allow the state to intervene in the lowest-performing schools;
  • Permit new high-quality charter schools to open if they meet certain standards, and permit the closure of low-performing charter schools;
  • Require administrators to be certified;
  • Require an annual evaluation of teachers and administrators using data on student growth;
  • Create alternative routes to teacher certification to help bring the best and brightest into our classrooms; and
  • Raise the dropout age from 16 to 18, effective for the high school class of 2016.

Detroit Micro-Enterprise Fund is Hiring

The Detroit Micro-enterprise Fund is seeking a Business Development Specialist.  This position is responsible for generating new loan volume, servicing a loan portfolio, training and technical assistance that meets the Detroit Micro-enterprise Fund’s mission, financial and risk goals.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.  An employee's specific job duties, priorities and performance expectations are detailed in his/her individual performance plan.

Actively prospect for loan opportunities from multiple sources, solicit loan customers, meet prospective borrowers, collect information, evaluate loan requests, negotiate loan terms and conditions.  Apply appropriate measures of development or ecological impact.


Underwrite loans in accordance with policy.  Prepare detailed risk analysis of borrowers' repayment ability including financial and industry analysis of the borrowers' businesses, present and defend loan proposals to loan committee and board of directors.  Administer and service Wayne County Urban Loan Fund.
Provide some workshop business training that covers business financials, management, industry trends and inventory.


Provide informal technical assistance services to community members, prospective clients and borrowers regarding plans, projections and business practices. 


Monitor outstanding borrowers for conformance with loan conditions, progress in meeting business goals, and overall business performance.  Reports all emerging problem loans to management as soon as weaknesses are detected.


Manage portfolio risk in accordance with industry and organization standards and directives of risk management.  Participate in collections and financial management of the portfolio as directed
May specialize through developing mission niches or through implementing particular strategies.
Participate fully with other members of the lending team on strategy, tactics and mission priorities.

Typical Problem Solving:  Defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts, and drawing valid conclusions.  Interpreting a variety of technical information and dealing with abstract and concrete variables.  Examples include: developing outreach strategies, evaluating credit worthiness, resolving customer concerns, negotiating financial terms, collecting problem loans.

Minimum Education Requirements:  Bachelor's degree, four years of college or equivalent experience required. 

Minimum Work Experience:  Three years relevant work experience.

Other Skills & Abilities:  
Specific experience lending to small businesses or to real estate construction
Working knowledge of computer business applications (word processing and spreadsheet)
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Proficiency with numbers and attention to detail
Finance and or bookkeeping
Business training experience
Ability to work independently and to balance multiple work assignments
Economic development experience working with low-to-moderate income persons and non-bankable businesses.

The City of Detroit Warming Center
The city warming center is now open.  Now that frigid temperatures have arrived, the Detroit Department of Human Services has opened its warming center.  The warming center is at Operation Get Down, located at 10100 Harper.  The center, which will be open through mid-February, is open from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. the next morning, including holidays.  When the high temperature stays at 10º or below, the warming center will extend its hours until noon. 
 
Christmas Tree Collection
Detroit residents can place their Christmas trees out for collection on their weekly trash collection day on Monday, Jan. 4 through Friday, Jan. 15.  Residents should place the tree near their Courville container no more than 24 hours before the scheduled pickup.
